WHS Board Meets to Inspire & Engage

WHS Board Meets to Inspire & Engage

In November, the Women in Homeland Security Board of Directors met for a weekend of planning, insight, and inspiration to develop the best programs and activities possible to elevate our members and build the homeland security community.

StoszWe were honored to have Vice Admiral Sandra Stosz, Commandant for Mission Support, for the U.S. Coast Guard join us for some inspiration.  She offered numerous tips and excellent advice..”Good leaders are soft…AND hard…and just.”

Her key tips included:

>Engaged Leadership:  it’s active, builds trust.  “Pause for People”

>Be yourself as a leader — stay true to yourself

>Mentor down

She also recommended that we read The Confidence Gap” from the Atlantic, and of course, Lean In by Sheryl Sandberg.

We met with Karin Hurt, CEO of Let’s Grow Leaders who discussed with us “Confident Humility & Servant Leadership.”  In her insightful talk, she offered numerous key tips including:

>>When you have a problem, focus on next steps – what to do about it.
>>When you get great results, you will attract more people to you.
>>Connection inspires high performance.  Don’t just try another newsletter, reorg, strategic plan…try face-to-face conversation.
>>Try dramatic moves that shock people and show how much you care.
>>Take one thing from today and commit to doing it…operationalize it.
>>Focus on behavior.  What behavior is needed in your organization?

o   The key is to balance confidence and humility.

  • Definition of humility:
    • Admit your mistakes
    • Know your vulnerabilities
    • Invite challengers

We also took some time to think about inspiration — for each Board member and their roles as leaders of our organization, and for each member of WHS.  In 2016 we strive to energize you, inspire you, and build our community.  We invite you to peruse the following photos and pick YOUR inspiration!
